Millom Infant School

Every child a learner, we all learn together

Religious Education

Our Vision:

Religious education builds children’s sense of identity and belonging within the world. At Millom Infant School we aim to encourage deep thought and personal reflection on big questions and ideas. We encourage children to share their own thoughts but also to be open-minded to the views of others. Children are encouraged to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. Our aim is to develop children’s respectful attitudes towards others who may have different faiths and beliefs to ourselves. We want to foster an understanding of diversity within the school, local community and wider area. Through a creative and ambitious R.E curriculum, we aim for all children to develop their thinking and knowledge.

Our Aims:

The Cumbria Agreed Syllabus states that ‘the aims of RE are to enable young people to be:

• To know about and understand a range of religious and non-religious worldviews by learning to see these through theological, philosophical and human science lenses.

• To express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religious and non-religious worldviews through a disciplinary approach.

• To gain and deploy skills rooted in theology, philosophy and the human sciences engaging critically with religious and non-religious worldviews.

• To be able to reflect on personal worldviews

Pupils’ progress in relation to this purpose and these aims of RE is gauged throughout the year. Millom Infant School students are encouraged to explore how religious and non-religious worldviews intertwine with one another and also encouraged to embrace diversity. Pupils reflect on the significance of interfaith discussion, the importance of opposing prejudice and of fighting discrimination. All of these areas allow our pupils to demonstrate inclusivity and acceptance of others.

Early Years:

Our pupils in Reception will follow the curriculum as set out in Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. We will encourage the children to begin making sense of the world and their community. To do this we will give them opportunities to discover, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment around them.

Key Stage 1:

During Key Stage One, we will encourage our pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism.. We will model subject specific vocabulary and we will encourage the children to use this language in their work. We will encourage our pupils to query things which puzzle them. We will also encourage the use of their own knowledge and understanding to begin expressing their personal views in response to the questions posed to them.

Throughout Key Stage One, we will regularly listen to a range of religious and moral stories and we will encourage them to reflect upon their meanings. We will also look at different festivals and religious holidays which help pupils to understand important principles found in the religions studied. The children will be encouraged to identify how people worship and how their worship links to their relationship with their deity/deities and how similarities can be found between faiths.
