Millom Infant School

Every child a learner, we all learn together

Reading

Our School Library:

In September 2024 our library moved rooms so it was towards the centre of the school building and more prevalent for pupils. At this time it was refreshed and redecorated so that it became a warm and welcoming place for children to read for pleasure.

Every class at Millom Infant School has an allotted library slot where children can go and explore our collection of fiction and non fiction texts with adults and their peers.

Over time it is our aspiration to improve this library space further by developing our catalogue of engaging texts to inspire a love of reading for all the children that access our library.

Mr Stewart's Silly Books:

Every week Mr Stewart picks a humorous book to read in story assembly with the children to promote the joy of reading. These titles are kept in a treasure chest which all classes can access if they have free time or wish to read something funny after completing their work. To promote reading at home we share  the title we have had that week on Class Dojo to sign post titles that families may wish to share with their children.

Some of the titles that we have in school which you may wish to read from our Silly Books Box can be found by looking at the images below.

World Book Day:

Millom Infant School seeks to develop a joy of reading in our learners and as such we take part in World Book Day in spring every year.

World Book Day was created to celebrate books and reading. Additionally, a survey from the National Literacy Trust found that half a million children do not own a single book and World Book Day attempts to address this issue and promote the importance of reading for children. Studies have also found that reading for pleasure helps children later in life.

In the UK specifically, the focus each year is to encourage children and young people to read for pleasure and for children to get together and share a love of reading both at school and at home. This can be done through story tellers, dressing up, sharing books and talking about them with each other.

On World Book Day, you can get a £1 token from National Book Tokens Ltd. These can be spent towards a regular priced book, or on one of the World Book Day £1 books. There are normally 15 different £1 books to choose from, at different reading levels.
