Millom Infant School
Every child a learner, we all learn together
Our Vision:
At Millom Infant School we promote physical education as part of a whole school approach to better health and wellbeing. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. At Millom Infant School we believe that physical activity is vital in children’s all-round development, enabling them to pursue happy and active lives.
Our Aims:
At Millom Infant School we aim to ensure that all pupils develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in competitive sports and activities and lead healthy, active lives.
Early Years:
We encourage the physical development of our children in the Early Years as an integral part of their work. We encourage the children to develop confidence and control of the way they move, and the way they handle tools and equipment. We provide regular opportunities for the children to be active. Through weekly PE sessions we provide them with opportunities to develop their co-ordination, control and movements. We give all the children the opportunity to undertake activities that offer appropriate physical challenge, both indoors and outdoors, using a range of resources to support specific skills.
Key Stage 1:
At Millom Infant School we give our children an opportunity to try out a range of different activities from fundamental skills, games, athletics, dance and gymnastics. This allows the children to work individually and in small groups; develop fundamental movement skills and learn through progressive games with an emphasis on fun and participation. They are encouraged to participate in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations. We ensure that the children practise key movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination. The children experience participating in team games and performing simple movement patterns in dance.
