Millom Infant School
Every child a learner, we all learn together
At our school, we use RWI handwriting to work alongside our phonics which is also RWI.
Early Years
In Reception, we teach every child how to hold a pencil comfortably to form letters correctly using the mnemonics from our phonic lessons. This is Stage One of the handwriting programme. The children do this every morning as part of their phonics lesson and then additional handwriting practice in the afternoon.
Key Stage 1
Once children can write the letters, they are ready to join Letter Village. At Stage Two, children form letters that will flow into a joined style.
In later stages, the children are taught how to join the letters and then build fluency. Children in key stage one do handwriting as part of their phonic lessons and have three afternoon sessions a week with the Letter Village.
Handwriting Matters
There are three reasons why children need fluent handwriting -
